Meet Tannen
On Father’s Day weekend 2019, Tannen’s skydiving journey took flight. He and his sister soared through their first tandem skydive at Wisconsin Skydiving Center (WSC), thanks to their adventurous dad, Shawn. A seasoned D license jumper from the 80s, Shawn wanted to gift this exhilarating experience to his kids – and what a gift it was! The experience was a thrill for Tannen, a cocktail of exhilaration, bliss, and a profound feeling of being truly alive. No sooner had they landed than Tannen and his sister, Kalee, snapped up jump passes for their next skyward adventure.
Fast forward to 2021, after another tandem experience and an open summer filled with possibilities, Tannen knew it was time to earn his skydiving license. Energized by the challenge and the opportunity to grow, especially within the practice of emotional management and surrender (to fall smoothly, one must relax their entire body!) that is essential to successful skydiving, Tannen fully committed to his training and earned his A license. This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the passionate support and expert guidance of Accelerated Free Fall instructors Jessica and Dario, along with the entire warm-hearted and experienced WSC staff.
Tannen’s skydiving journey didn’t stop there. He participated in the 2021 Rookiefest skydiving competition at Skydive Chicago and proudly walked away with the Attitude Award. This honor, which celebrated his exemplary mindset of growth and community that was shared throughout the event, came with a newly minted G4 Cookie Helmet – talk about a soaring success!
Not stopping there, he also trained as a packer and has completed over 500 pack jobs. Next time you’re at WSC, you might see him on the packing mat, preparing your tandem parachute for your jump!
“Packing a parachute is a true honor of responsibility. It’s a mindful task that helps to create a transformative experience, enabling someone to explore new possibilities, build self-trust, and discover new aspects of themselves – being able to be a part of offering this opportunity is one of the most humbling and fulfilling gifts I’ve come across! Plus, it’s a great workout and an excellent form of meditation!”
Tannen’s found more than just a hobby at WSC; he’s found a family. It’s a community he’s proud to call home. His favorite skydives have been the mesmerizing sunset jumps and a tracking jump with Sean, Travis, Josh Krahn, and Matt Ziems that truly gave the feeling of flying like a bird among a flock – amazing! Up next for Tannen? Earning a Coach rating with the dream of becoming a tandem instructor. ‘Tandems with Tannen’ has a pretty nice ring to it, don’t you think?
